Job Description: Library Aide
Position Overview:
The Library Aide is responsible for providing support and assistance within the library environment, ensuring the smooth operation of library services and delivering excellent customer service to patrons. The Library Aide will perform a variety of tasks, including shelving and organizing library materials, assisting with circulation activities, and providing basic reference and information services. This position requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Shelving library materials accurately and efficiently according to established guidelines.
- Organizing and maintaining the library collection, including sorting and filing materials.
- Assisting patrons with circulation activities, such as checking items in and out, issuing library cards, and collecting fines.
- Providing basic reference and information services to patrons, including locating materials and answering general inquiries.
- Assisting with the operation of library equipment, such as computers, printers, and scanners.
- Maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of library spaces, including shelving areas, study rooms, and common areas.
- Assisting in the preparation and organization of library displays and exhibits.
- Collaborating with library staff to develop and implement programs and events, such as storytimes, workshops, and book clubs.
- Assisting with interlibrary loan services, including processing requests and ensuring timely delivery.
- Participating in library inventory management activities, including conducting audits and identifying missing or damaged items.
- Staying updated on library policies, procedures, and resources to provide accurate information to patrons.
- Assisting with the collection and compilation of library statistics and reports as required.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent qualification.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Excellent attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in shelving and organizing library materials.
- Familiarity with library classification systems and knowledge of basic cataloging principles.
- Proficiency in using library management systems and computer applications.
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to assist patrons in a friendly and professional manner.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Basic knowledge of reference resources and the ability to assist patrons with general inquiries.
- Physical stamina to perform tasks such as lifting, bending, and reaching when shelving materials.
